Empowering Communities Through Health Equity

Discover how our initiatives make a difference in Los Angeles.

At In The People’s Corner (ITPC), we are committed to advancing health equity for Los Angeles’ underserved and homeless communities. Through our flagship initiative, Louie’s Clinic, we partner with health organizations to deliver free, multidisciplinary services directly to areas of greatest need. From COVID-19  to general health screening, our holistic approach aims to address health disparities and foster trust within marginalized communities. Together, we strive to create a system of care that uplifts everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status.

Lack of access to health care and other social services exacerbate the health risks associated with homelessness and increase the likelihood of adverse health outcomes.

The mortality rate among people experiencing homelessness in LA has increased by 55% from 2019 to 2021. Drug overdoses are the leading cause of death, accounting for 37% of deaths in this group.

A national study on the unmet health care needs of homeless adults found that 73% reported at least one unmet health care need, including medical care (32%), prescription medications (36%), mental health care (21%), eyeglasses (41%), and dental care (41%). Food insufficiency, out-of-home placement as a minor, and lack of health insurance were significant predictors of unmet needs, contributing to mistrust and hesitancy in seeking medical services.

People experiencing homelessness have higher rates of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and HIV. While COVID-19 has been a significant cause of death worldwide, unhoused individuals die at a rate 2.35 times higher than the general population.

Stories of Impact

At one St. James clinic, we met a woman who was a recent immigrant from Mexico. She hadn’t been to a doctor in years, and when we checked her blood sugar it was in the high 300s, consistent with a diagnosis of diabetes. We immediately scheduled her for a primary care clinic appointment with one of our partners. A year later, she excitedly checks her levels at our clinic to show us her sugar is well controlled and has helped the rest of her family establish care at the same primary care clinic.
At Arroyo Seco, an older gentleman would frequently help us set up our clinic every month and chat with us while we were present. He didn’t utilize many of our services but appreciated the manner in which we interacted with the clients. When a shy new client moved to the site who had a lot of complex medical issues, he made sure to bring this client to our clinic. We coordinated transport to the emergency room so this client could get the immediate care he needed while we set up a future clinic appointment for him. This would not have occurred without the initial trust established from our prior interactions at the facility.

Health in Focus: LA's Challenges

Life Expectancy

Do you think life expectancy is consistent across Los Angeles?

No. Life expectancy can vary by up to 15 years between neighborhoods due to socioeconomic and environmental factors.

Healthcare Access

Everyone in LA has access to preventive healthcare, right?

Actually, over 2 million people in LA County are uninsured or lack access to regular preventive care.

Chronic Disease

Aren't chronic illnesses like diabetes equally common across all communities?

No. Diabetes rates are 30-40% higher in low-income neighborhoods compared to wealthier areas.

Environmental Impact

Is air pollution a health problem for all LA residents equally?

Communities of color are disproportionately exposed to harmful pollutants, increasing their risk of asthma and other respiratory illnesses.
