I volunteered with ITPC from 2020 until 2023 when I moved away to attend medical school. I learned how a non-profit organization could adapt to serve the community. At the core of everything ITPC does, is a compassionate and non-judgemental person who is trying to make life better, even in a small way. As a second year medical student in Philadelphia, I have taken these skills and applied them to street outreach efforts, mobile substance use vans, and started a Harm Reduction Week on my campus. I am so grateful for the experiences I had working with ITPC, as they helped shape the core of the kind of provider I hope to become.
As a member of ITPC, I got a better appreciation for what it was like to meet people where they are. I not only get to learn how to be a better advocate for health equity to those experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, but also learn more about the communities we serve in meaningful and honest ways.
One encounter that stands out to me was a gentleman who came to the clinic with worn-out shoes and a blood pressure reading of 190/110. After providing him with a new pair of shoes and explaining how he could start managing his blood pressure, he expressed profound gratitude, saying “Thank you, you’ve given me more than shoes- you’ve reminded me that people care.” The most rewarding part about volunteering for In the People’s Corner has been seeing the immediate impact of our efforts whether it was a smile, a word of thanks, or even a visible improvement in someone’s condition. Working alongside other volunteers in the organization who shared a similar passion for making a difference has inspired me and I am so grateful for the opportunity to give back to my community in this meaningful way.
